5. What is Astigmatism?
Astigmatism definition: A visual defect in which the unequal curvature of one or more refractive surfaces of the eye, usually the cornea, prevents light rays from focusing clearly at one point on the retina, resulting in blurred vision, In spectacle lenses and contact lenses this is shown to be corrected when the sphere, cylindrical and axis values are completed in your prescription.
6. Prescription insert
A prescription insert can be ordered to your exact spectacle prescription, usually the insert sits behind the lens of the frame and is significantly smaller than a regular pair of spectacles. You can choose to have our standard plastic lens, which is included in the price or a specialist material called Trivex which is thinner and lighter than standard plastic and significantly more impact resistant - a great choice for active people!
7. Prescription goggle
A prescription goggle can be only be ordered from a pre-selected range. They are only spherical in correction but do provide an excellent level of vision for low astigmatic corrections. You don't need to worry because when you provide your prescription details we will issue you with the most appropriate prescription.
8. Entering your prescription
Our website allows you to order your prescription glasses online. As part of the order process, you can use your optician-provided prescription to fill in a simple prescription entry form.
"Tool-tips" on the prescription form provide further information for each of the main prescription values (place your mouse cursor over the "i" symbol) which are also explained below.
- Lens Anti-reflection coating: Our anti reflection coating is a technologically advanced multilayer coating that is scratch and smear resistant. The coating allows you to have a superior, natural and reflection free vision. In addition, the lens coating provides protection from harmful UVB & UVA rays.
- Pupillary Distance: This measurement is usually taken by your Optician. It centres the lens in front of your pupil so you do not experience any visual discomfort. If you are unable to provide this we will assume an average of 65mm for men and 63mm for women. However on higher prescriptions (over +/- 4.00DS) we would strongly recommend that you ask your optician to provide this measurement.
- Lens thickness: All our standard lenses are made as thin as possible but if you would like to have thinner and lighter weight lenses (recommended for prescriptions over +/-3.00DS and rimless frames) please choose one of the options.
- Right/Left Sphere: This is the spherical power of your prescription, this tells us whether you are short or long sighted and by how much. This can also be Plano or Zero in some cases.
- Right/Left Cylinder: Usually the second part of the prescription, a sphere combined with a cylinder and an axis usually denotes correction of astigmatism.
- Right/Left Axis: Usually the third part of the prescription and only ever present for an astigmatic correction, will range from 0 to 180.
- Right/Left Reading Add: This is usually only present if you have been advised to have reading spectacles. To obtain your full reading correction you normally add the sphere component to the Reading Add but don’t worry we’ll do that for you.
